:: artist's statement
Mitzi Levin brings the art of collage into another dimension with work that achieves a purity of form and expression. Her use of color is fresh and she achieves a dynamic balance of lights and darks by carefully conceived placement of hand-made, rice and found papers. Much of Levin's work has an oriental feeling and, like the Eastern artists, she creates a powerful impact with a minimum use of forms. Her work is strong while retaining an echoing quietness about it.
A Poughkeepsie resident, Mitzi Levin has studied painting in New York City, at Vassar College and most recently, at the Barrett House/Dutchess County Art Association. The past 12 years have been devoted to the medium of collage and she has taken two first prize awards and an honorable mention in juried exhibitions sponsored by the Dutchess County Art Association, of which she is a member. She says of her work, "When I started working with paper, it was like an open door to a world of imagination that I never believed to be possible. The thrill of working with paper as an art never fails to interest me." Her work is represented in various private collections.
